How Does Noise Shape the Structure of Gene Regulatory Networks? -- supervisor: Prof. Dirk Metzler
If gene expression noise is not only inevitable but also beneficial — for example, because traits with an optimal level of noise may improve adaptability under natural selection — then a central question arises: What kinds of gene regulatory network structures are likely to evolve under these conditions, and which of them are more robust in the presence of noise?
This project surveys how the structure of a gene regulatory network may change over time, assuming that the expression noise is given and remains fixed. The Dynamics of Structural Stability in Modularly Designed Laboratory Plankton Communities -- supervisor: Dr. Maria Stockenreiter
We use laboratory-controlled planktonic communities to systematically examine structural stability and refine models of community structure dynamics.

Developed an advanced tension zone model integrating assortative mating as a sexual selection term
Showed that with assortative mating at a single locus, the model reduces to a classic reaction-diffusion form; derived a traveling wave solution with some approximation; investigated conditions for the maintenance and boundaries of clines
Showed that genetic predictions of the continuous model for European crow populations align with discrete model results

Calculated species abundance and structural stability in metacommunity patches, following the Lotka-Volterra model (using linear approximation near equilibrium); applied resampling and null models to assess random effects
Found that interaction networks comprising all interacting species in a patch show higher structural stability, while subsets display lower stability, consistent with predictions from structural stability theory

Surveyed flowering phenology, DBH, height, and growth rate of ~1,000 ginkgo (Ginkgo biloba) trees on Zhejiang University campus.
Identified significant gender differences in ginkgo reproductive phenology, with male strobili emerging earlier than female strobili, shedding light on reproductive strategies in gymnosperms.
